Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Discourse Construction Tests

For example, the DCT is unable to account for the cultural and individual differences in communicative behavior. Additionally the DCT can be biased and could result in overgeneralizations. As a result, it must be carefully analyzed before it is used for research or assessment purposes.
Despite its limitations, the DCT is a valuable instrument to study the relationship between prosody, information structure and non-native speakers. The ability to manipulate social variables that affect the manner of speaking in two or more steps could be a benefit. This ability can aid researchers to study the role played by prosody in communication across cultural contexts, a major challenge in cross-cultural pragmatics.

Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study investigated Chinese learners making pragmatic choices when using Korean. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate level who responded to DCTs, MQs, and RIs. They were also asked to consider their evaluations and refusal responses in RIs. Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their ongoing life experiences and their relationships. These findings have pedagogical implications for L2 Korean assessment.
The MQ data was analyzed first to identify the participants' actual choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they were a sign of pragmatic resistance. Interviewees also had to explain why they chose an atypical behavior in certain situations.

For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors helped facilitate a more relaxed performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural norms of their university.
The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures and penalties they could be subject to if their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their local friends might think they are "foreigners" and think they are unintelligent. This concern was similar to those voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These findings suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the default preference of Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. Future researchers should consider reassessing the validity of these tests in different cultural contexts and in specific situations. This will enable them to better comprehend how different environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of students in the classroom and beyond. They also exhibited a strong tendency to include their own text, or "garbage," to their responses, further detracting from their quality of response.
